In the rich tapestry of Hindu mythology, Vasuki stands out as a figure of immense strength and devotion. Vasuki, the king of serpents, is the son of the sage Kashyap and the serpent queen Kadru. Known for his formidable presence and unwavering loyalty, Vasuki is revered as one of the most powerful and influential beings in the divine realm.
One of the most celebrated episodes involving Vasuki is the Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the ocean, a grand event described in the Vishnu Purana. During this monumental event, the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) sought to restore the world’s lost prosperity and recover precious treasures hidden in the depths of the ocean. They churned the ocean using the Mandara Mountain as the churning rod.
To aid in this task, Vasuki was chosen to serve as the churning rope. wrapping itself around the Mandara Mountain, Vasuki became the central axis for the churning of the ocean.
As the churning progressed, the ocean yielded a treasure trove of divine entities, including the sacred Amrita (the elixir of immortality) and Halahala (a deadly poison). The Amrita represented the ultimate boon for the gods, while the Halahala posed a grave threat to creation.
To protect the world from its devastating effects, Lord Shiva, drank the Halahala. His act of sacrifice to save the cosmos further exemplified the divine interplay of forces during the churning.
Vasuki wrapped itself around neck of Shiva to stop the effect of poison from entering Shiva’s body. Impressed by Vasuki’s selfless service and unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva honoured him by adorning himself with Vasuki as a garland around his neck. This gesture not only symbolized the serpent’s esteemed place in the divine hierarchy but also represented the awakened Kundalini energy of the Muladhara chakra, reflecting the balance of spiritual and worldly forces.
